It goes without saying that if you’ve got a home, you need home insurance, too. However, there are so many choices out there when it comes to policies that it can get very confusing indeed. You’ve got so many companies who want your business that it may get overwhelming.
Here are some tips to help you wend your way through the process, so that it’s just a little bit less confusing, and so that you get the coverage you really want and need.
Go online
These days, every major insurance company is online — and most smaller ones will be, too. You should be able to go online and do a quick search via Google or another search engine simply to find out who provides homeowners insurance coverage, and then to narrow down choices to those that provide the coverage you want.
Decide on the coverage you want
Chances are, you want to have coverage that will pay for repairs or replace your home and possessions at “then-current” values at the time of need, not their market value now. There may be a problem with replacing at current market values, since you’ll be limited in what you can replace and may end up short. For most people, therefore, it’s a good idea to have coverage that will replace your home and possessions at replacement value prices, not current value.
What type of policy do you want?
You need to decide the type of policy you want, and in addition will need to make sure everything you want to have covered is actually covered. Therefore, go through your home and take inventory of everything you own, and estimate its current value. In addition, check to see if you need additional coverage, such as if you live in an area that’s prone to flooding.
What’s your deductible going to be?
The more you can pay for your deductible, the less expensive your premiums will be. Therefore, it may be wise for you to decide that you should have deductible out-of-pocket costs of $500 or $1000, for example, after which time the policy will kick in with the additional monies to repair or replace home and possessions.
Get quotes
Once you’ve investigated several companies, and decided on the coverage you want, you can ask for quotes from these companies, so that you can compare rates. (You should be able to do all of this online, quickly and easily.)
Establish contact with agents in person
Before you make your final choice, make sure you’re going to be able to talk to your agent in person. You don’t want to have done everything online only to have disaster strike and not know quite who you should contact. Talk with several agents first, if you wish, or choose your policy and then make sure you can establish contact with an agent in a sort of “getting to know you” fashion. This way, if you do have to use your insurance, you’ll know who to contact and will be comfortable doing so.
Once you get your insurance policy
Once you get your insurance policy, check it thoroughly to make sure everything you want is included. Take an inventory of everything in your home and make sure to include this with your policy papers as well — and keep everything in a safe place, where it won’t be lost in the event of disaster. That way, you can quickly grab everything you need if something should happen, so that your claims process gets under way smoothly and order is restored as quickly as possible.
